Check your fuel filler tube. It might've been knocked around during the install.

Was thyere any drilling done for the wiring during the install? Is it possible that some how a fuel feed or return line or even the gas tank was drilled into? I guess if that happened you would get some kind of code or something though.

Feed or return line cut = spilled gas outside the car

But hes right. If they accidently drilled into your gas tank while doing the wiring then it would definatly cause that smell. Take it back to the shop that did the work and demand they replace the tank, or at least have them look at it. Its entirely possible they drilled a hole in it

As for drilling into the fuel tank, I'd seriously question the competance of your installer if such a thing happened so I don't think that it's likely either. Inspect your trunk by pulling out your rear seat cushion and inspect for any stains or residue under the cushion.. then check the trunk the same way by lifting up your carpet. As for the fuel filler hose, I'd highly doubt it. The fuel lines and hoses are entirely external from the cab of the vehicle and the trunk itself. The trunk is effectively sealed from anything involving you filling your gas tank. If there is a gasoline residue in your trunk, I'd look under the car for problems. Look for dry-rotted hoses or moist fittings/clamps. Most likely it's something underneath the car thats caused the odor to enter the trunk. I had a weed whacker in the back of my trunk this afternoon and I can smell gasoline in the cab of my car. This is simply from having the weed whacker in the trunk. So if there was a gas/fuel problem related to the inside of your trunk, you'd most likely smell it through out the entire car.

Thanx for the replies....I know I didnt explain it well....

- There arent any spill spots around the outside of the car (that Ive noticed)
- It smells like fresh gas.
- I thought that it might be an exhaust leak from under the cabin...maybe like a bad weld or something...could that be it?
- I dont have my a/c controls in right now. I took them out to send to BBE and I had the heat nobs on the unit turned on.....but the fans werent pushing the heat into the car.....its like the heater being on, but not on...you know what I mean?? I noticed it more-so after I did that. But I did the install that day to, so not sure on that one..
- I got the install done at Best Buy..So, I thought they were professional. Like they have to take classes and stuff....so I dont think that they drilled a hole in the tank.....but I will pull up all the carpeting and everything tonight when I get home....

anything else anyone can think of?
things I should look for?
anything Im not explaining well enough?

TIA guys

G

Bad assumption... most of the guys that install at the chain stores (Circuit City, Best Buy, etc) aren't very good. You are MUCH better off going to a reputable car stereo shop. They are usually much better installers because it's a small business where bad installs can sink the whole business...

I've worked in both (didn't last long in the chain store), and would never go to a chain to get work done...

Gas fumes can kill. Borrow your momma's car, drive over to Best Buy and tell them that they totally fooked your car up and that they need to have it picked up and repaired.

Having experienced both, I would tend to agree. But, now I'm going to do it myself and that's tons better than either. Wink

ok....I dont know if this will help at all...\

I roll with the windows down....I dont know if this would get rid of the smell or not....

but it seems to me that the only time it smells is when I first get in the car...but since I roll with the winders down, would that help relieve some of the smelL??

question:

If they put a hole in the gas tank, wouldnt that create like a loss in pressure or something....making the fuel lines unable to grab the gas and push it through???

Could it be like a gasket leak in the engine bay? prob not, b/c I smell it too in the trunk....

where exactly is the gas tank on the imp??? I mean, is it in front of the spare tire well..? or to the side of it/???

just so i can know what to look for.

1: No. The tank isn't pressurized. There are pressure release systems to keep the thing exploding via compression. Think of the pump as a vacuum.
2: If you smell it in the trunk, then it's probably in the trunk.
3: The tank is in front of the tire well. If you pull your carpet back, you'll see the fuel pump access door up close to the seats.

Ya.
