why was my mileage better with the trunk open? I mean it's normally cost $19 to 23$ for the same trip while it was only 13$..

29.6mpg highway for the same trip with the trunk open... had some stuff in the trunk

I'd assume this is because of the "pick up truck" air bubble effect where the car has a bigger "aerodynamic air bubble" compared to a closed trunk. which has zero air bubble effect

the only down side was exhaust fumes though had to have the a/c fan on inside (a/c off)

Yeah I had 175pounds of scrap metal I came out ahead at $35.50 gas was only $13.30 at $2.71

149miles I made this same trip unloaded costing me 23$ at 2.59

long way for the trip $21 200 miles (at lower gas price of 2.39)

You had a tail wind.
The open trunk lid acted as an air catcher.

I wonder what the temp was during both trips. I get really good gas mileage out when its above 50.

I don't think so since air entered the cabin from front windows out threw the trunk ...(other wise I would get exhaust in the car since traffic was slightly heavy and slow in some spots)
