I have a 2.5 inch downpipe, would switching to a 3 inch provide any benefits?

absolutely, should have been running 3" from the start.

At least thats how they were marketed in the beginning. 3" for turbo / SC cars and 2.5" for NA

Is it more beneficial to have the exit flange of the downpipe 3" and keep that diameter all the way through the exhaust system? Or is a 3" entry with 2.5" outlet and cat back exhaust the remainder of the way ok enough?

Really depends on the setup. A single 2.5" exhaust will flow less than a 2.5" dual exhaust. Also, you still need back pressure on a daily driven street car. But on a drag car, your exhaust is only as good as the most restrictive part.

Well based on the mods I have planned, a 2.5" downpipe exit and cat back exhaust should be fine. I don't plan to intercool my car or run smaller than a 3" SC pulley. Basic tune, CAI, exhaust and undersized pulleys are what I have in mind. I asked about the 3" all the way through just to see if there were any additional benefits

I had a 3" all the way through to a 2.5" Y pipe. But that was back when only 1 guy sold downpipes and made them in his garage. The 3" to 2.5" option didnt come about till a bit after.
