I figured I would get this done before it left me stranded, it is usually a matter of when and not if. Anyway I saw a bit of oil in the valleys of the upper plenum, not sure where it was coming from, I replaced the valve cover gaskets as well while I was at it.

Used the Delco lower intake manifold gaskets and the Dorman upper manifold kit, also changed out the plastic elbows for aluminum but added better orings. Job took me 4.5 hours.

Attached are a few pics of where the gaskets and plenum were about to fail, 191,000 kilometers at time of change. I had also ditched the dexcool a few years back. When you see the pics it's obvious where these parts eventually fail.

Yup, did exactly the same thing several years ago. Had my friend who's been a Buick tech at the local dealer since 1988 do the same thing using real GM parts. Manifold, metal gaskets, & plastic elbows. Been running like a top since then. Those 3800's are great engines. When I worked there at the parts counter, I sold 2-3 plastic intake manifolds a day, but rarely the lower gaskets. GARY

Genuine GM AC Delco "non Dexcool" antifreeze.

Good choice on the gaskets. I usually use the doorman upper set and gm lower also. I did my upper already but still have to do the lower. After my oil pan probably. Those oil pans are a bastard to get to

3634621 - GM Cooling System Seal Tabs- For Cadillac Aluminum Engines & Other GM Iron & Aluminum Engines

was the source of damaging the engine raid etc..

there is no real risk of serious oxidation/corrosion of the engine block form the coolant you need air to rust the engine block....

just like titanic will not rust away for a few hundred more years No oxygen(or air) = No rust in water
