I'm interested in getting a new head unit. The using the corded tape adapter to cellphone method has been way overdone and it's time for a change. Not to mention a lot of the lights have quit lighting up.

I'm looking for a double din unit with Bluetooth. Anyone have any recommendations? Figured there's been a few stereos upgraded round here lol

Since the factory head unit controls the settings for the car, how can you change the settings once the FHU, is swapped out?

Greetings! There are things you should know when replacing the head units in these cars. Does your car have a bose system? If yes you'll need an adapter to keep the power and door chimes from the bose system. Does your car have steering wheel controls that u want to continue using? If yes, same for that as well. In regards to controlling settings on the car through the factory head, most important things like TPS message (tire pressure system) and change engine oil message can be controlled with the headlight switch and the gas pedal, I believe. It is listed in your manual. Other things like headlight illumination time after leaving the car and factory horn settings with keyless entry I think are only controlled through the factory head, so if you're switching it out make sure you have those set the way you want, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to hang onto the factory head in case you ever want to change stuff that can't be changed without it. I believe there are people on here that have mounted and wired the factory head in the trunk just to still have control of their settings for this reason.

Anyway, this is the double-din bluetooth stereo I chose. It is a Kenwood DDX-470. It's not the greatest but it has some good options I enjoy like Pandora, and Bluetooth audio. Bought it from Crutchfield:

Thanks dan073eb!

I was talking to a guy today about stereos and he told me a lot of people who have head units that control vehicle functions usually get an adapter so it's relocated to the trunk. Just as you'd mentioned. Guess its a no-brainer now lol.

I like the Kenwood you have. Do Impala logos come installed on the HU from the retailer? Either way it's a cool feature. With Christmas around the corner, I might be able to sweet talk the Mrs Very Happy

You could also go with a single DIN, and use a mounting plate.
These are badass, but they're a little costly for my taste. Several members here have one, though, and swear by the quality.

Silenced I wouldn't necissarily swear by the quality... Laughing

They are really cool!! (But I'm pretty sure I could make a higher quality one..
(Check out my garage pics to see what they look like)

2 of the 3 tabs that hold it in place broke off during install b/c I tightened the screws too tight.
Someone on this site laughed and called them "wood screws", at the time..
The plastic back plate is of questionable durability.. 2 Cents

I've got a guy that thinks we can do this fairly simple, but I haven't had the interest in my group of friends to take on the project..
(and, being a designer, I tend to take copyright issues fairly serious)

Thanks guys for the replies. Me personally, I'm only interested in a double din to take up the large space. Also needs Bluetooth to be able to sync music from my cellphone. LOL, this way it's pure music with zero advertisements or commercials.

The single din IMO looks out of place with that much area to cover.

yeah i agree in the impala its like its from the past. i could of sworn that company that i posted makes a double. for my 91 v3500 it comes stock with a 1.5 din (thanks gm) but it fills the space of a double din cause of the face plate.
