2012 Chevrolet Impala

PostPosted: Tue Jul 29, 2014 1:33 pm    Post subject:  Odd Grinding Reply with quote

Hey guys;

Need some advice on this one. 2012 Chevy Impala LT, 68000Km, has an interimitent grind coming from the front left tire. Only happens when turning the tires left, meaning it happens in reverse too. Does not happen all the time, usually when the car has been parked for any length of time (6hrs to 2days). Does happen rarely after ive been driving for a while and i need to make a hard left turn. When it grinds the car actually dives down alittle thats how hard the grind is. Any thoughts? I can try to provide more information if needed. Also the front brakes are brand new including rotors.

I have felt ABS many times before (gotta love Canadian winters haha) and it doesn't feel like this at all. Wouldn't ABS affect both tires at the same time? I'm only concerned because of how hard the car grinds when it does it, it feels like its catching on something but it doesn't happen all the time.

If somehow one hub is acting up it might explain it. I don't know what else would cause it to 'catch'.

It's a longshot, but have you looked into the ISS? I can't remember if they still gave problems in this generation.

At the risk of sounding incompetent, what is the ISS and how do I check it? Also how can I check the hub? I've never dealt with anything paste brakes and minor engine repairs.

ISS is the intermediate steering shaft. You can usually feel it vibrating in the steering wheel if it's acting up, but I wouldn't think that's the issue as you feel it catching.

To check the hub, put the car up on jack stands and grab the offending wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and give it a wiggle. It shouldn't move much at all. If it does, you may have found your problem.
