When I worked for the Caddy dealer in Miami, that was par for the course. The lazy techs would only change the front plugs figuring the car would run better, & the car owners would never know. And this was a dealership where they had all the correct tools & GM know how. GARY

If it's a shadetree mechanic doing that, it's just stupid. If it's a dealer charging someone and only doing half the work, that is downright despicable.

It's piece of s**t techs like that that give the industry a bad name. Seem to be a lot of them.

yeah you cant trust many dealers or garages nowdays. had a run in with one my mom took her van to. the guy said he cleaned the egr ports but somehow never took the throttle body off to clean these ports. must admit his tool was pretty good Wink cause it was able to clean all the ports and 90 turns in the ports. but some how the check engine light was still on

That doesn't necessarily indicate shadiness. The shop I used for a little while never cleared out the codes unless I reminded them, but they always did what they said they did.

no the light staying on doesnt mean shady but the fact they have to remove the throttle body to clean the ports and you could still see the dirt. not to mention when you question how it was done the "mechanic" walked away when i started asking questions( i wasnt being abusive just trying to understand how he could do what he said and how he let all the shavings fall into the engine which he said he did) then after he walked away the owner turned her back and just left me sitting there talking to myself lol.

oh not to mention it also had a miss, so me being me (the van only has 2 coil packs) i switch coil packs to see if the miss followed the pack and left it switched but my mom didn't tell them i looked at it already. the same "mechanic" said the coil pack was bad on the side that had the miss. i just started to laugh and asked how you come up with that. he said his tester told him. i then brought up the fact that i switch the coil packs so the one he replaced was the one off the good side. come to find out a wire wasnt connected fully and arced the contacts up so it wasnt making contact.

yeah this shop is no longer in business, its a shame because the original owner jim was a good man wouldnt let this happen but his daughters are kind of stuck up and all they see is money or should i say all they saw was money.

and if you clear the code it still comes back on

I was just pointing it out. The way I read your post, it seemed like you were making the check engine light still being on the smoking gun.

At least they didn't put Bosch in there.
