2003 Chevrolet Impala

Hello. Has any one every swapped a later 3.9 in place of the 3.4? Is it just a bolt in or is there a lot of mods to do this? Does the 3.9 do better on gas or have more power then the 3.4? What years are the best to use? Thank-you....

Don't know that it's been done, but can tell you it would be easier (and possibly even cheaper) to just buy an Impala already equipped with the 3.9...

The only cross gen engine swap I can recall was a guy that dropped an LS4 into his 2004 or 2005. It was a ton of work, he didn't do it and couldn't answer any questions about it. Unless you have a ton of knowledge, it's not worth the trouble.

physically it would fit right in, electronically it would be a nightmare. You would need a complete donor car for the swap. Harnesses, computers, dash components would all need switching over.

You are looking as tons of work, thousands of dollars and lots of time for minimal gains

it would be a nice upgrade since you could make use of that 6 speed transmission.

3.6 L LFX that delivers 302 hp (225 kW) and 252 lbft (342 Nm) of torque with the 6 speed tras..

thats a "upgrade"

Now you're talking about a different engine entirely. The OP is asking about the 3.9L that was offered in the 06+ Impalas.

As everyone else has already told you, the swap wold likely be a nightmare and not very reliable if it were to be daily driven.

Aside from all the points Whitelightning made... If you really want that particular engine the best 'upgrade' is to upgrade the entire car.

I don't see much benefit of this swap, but you could throw some 3.5 parts on it if you want. (certain parts.)
