While on vacation this past week in Myrtle Beach my '04 SS decided it wanted to have the lower intake manifold gasket start to leak. It wasn't a huge leak, but enough for me to smell the coolant burn on the engine, and see a bit of steam from the front passenger side. When I popped the hood there was a bit of coolant under the hood too. After almost 10 years and 98k, it was about due for it to happen.

I took it to one of the local shops who did the upper and lower with the newer aluminum gaskets. While he was in there he replaced the coolant elbows with metal ones as well. After looking at the plastic ones (including one that had been replaced last year right before we went to Myrtle Beach), I'm glad he did. He charged me $10 for an oil change, using the oil/filter I picked up at the AutoZone around the corner from his shop. He was able to get it in the shop Friday at noon and get it back to me by 10am Saturday.

Watch out for the gaskets on the metal coolant elbows. The ones that come with them are pretty shoddy. I ended up buying GM elbows to steal the gaskets for the metal ones on mine because they started leaking in a few months...

Yep, I remember him specifically mentioning the crappy o-rings that came with the metal elbows as I was looking at the plastic ones. He said he went with the GM rings.

Nice. Glad you were lucky enough to find a decent mechanic.
