Im new to this site so bare with me please. Well im 17 but im thinking about getting a 2003 Impala for my first car. I do have money saved up for the car and accessories. I just need to know what your opinion is. Should I work on the outside of the car first or the inside of the car first?

I say it depends on what you want. First and foremost, the car needs to be reliable. I always prefer mods that give me better performance - whether it be HP, acceleration, braking, handling, etc. If you want the car to be showy - that's fine, but keep in mind that it will attract attention and not all that attention will be positive (police stopping you, people breaking into your car, etc.)

In the end, it's all up to you...but make sure it is reliable and well taken care of first. A $1000 sound system isn't going to do anything for you if your car is stuck in the driveway because you can't start it. Likewise with a fancy paint job or larger wheels.

Agreed on both counts. Any 10+ year old Impala is likely gonna need some thing addressed. Take care of the stuff that needs to be repaired and if you want to upgrade stuff as you fix it initially.

If you are looking for performance, go 3800 not the 3400 motor. More out there for the 3800 in the aftermarket

An 03 is 11 years old, so there will be the normal issues to deal with. Just assume its going to need struts, brakes, tires maybe, and who knows what else. Tranny issues seem to be the biggest thing that can get you (look around here). Even if you know what your doing, most garages will do a used car inspection for cheap/free. Take everything with a grain of salt that they say but do listen. There are PLENTY of Impala's out there, so be a little picky!

+100 on getting the 3.8 vs the 3.4. I have the 3.4 (3400) and it sucks. I thought I'd give up some of the 3.8's power for gas mileage, but the 3400 isnt that great (19mpg overall here). Plus, the 3.8 is bulletproof after you fix the bad intake gaskets. Really, can I say it any clearer, get the 3.8 Laughing

Needing things like brakes/struts/whatever isnt a red flag-its a chance to upgrade! Wander through the forums & see the "common" topics, youll see what you need to keep an eye out for.

Good luck! Lots of good people here with tons of knowledge willing to help out.

being that you are only 17, if you want a 11 year old car you will be working on it. my first vehicle i would op for something that wasnt computer controlled just so you get the hang of things. i would go for a 73-87 chevy truck.
yes you will be working on it but it wont be as picky as a computer controlled car and no you wont get as good gas millage but its an old historic truck not something that is not new or old enough to be cool.

now granted i might be bias i only have one car (impala) but as you can see i have many more trucks Twisted Evil

I agree with this completely. I got my first car ('68 Impala) when I was 14 (21 years ago!!!!), and spent two years restoring it and fixing it up. Not only did I gain a ton of basic mechanic knowledge, but learned to appreciate/love that car. The older cars are so much easier to work on. To this day, I prefer working on that '68 over the '04 SS.

While the 3800 is a great engine, at some point it will need a new plastic intake manifold. The EGR tube gets the plastic manifold so hot, it warps slightly. I had mine changed at 150,000 miles. It wasn't gone yet, but it had 1 foot in the grave, & 1 on a banana peel. Since it was already off the car for a LIM change, I replaced it. We sold so many at work, we got them in by the pallet load.
