with a new egr, also been reprogrammed for 10% exhaust tolerance, still throwing engine check code.
do i need a new computer...
with the diagnositc on, the tolerance still reads 12%...brand new egr..and a second one. mech says computer...what do you say?
It's so easy for a tech to say 'You need a new ECM. Back in my GM parts days, I would sell 10 ECM's per day over the back parts counter. [Tech's working on customer's cars] 7 were given back, as that didn't solve the problem, but it was the easiest thing to change. [and try] Nowadays, We hardly sell any PCM's. [somewhere years ago the name changed from ECM, to PCM] They are made much better, & hardly fail, & with the OBD2 tool, it's much easier to correctly diagnose a problem. Sadly, if you buy a PCM, & it doesn't solve the problem, you can't return it, as there's no return of electrical parts. But at the dealer, when a tech tries a PCM, if it doesn't solve the problem, he can bring it back, as the customer hasn't paid for it yet. This is where the term "parts changers" came to be. GARY
I had the code years and years ago after doing some trailer towing with my 3.8. I reflashed the PCM and haven't had any issues since. The PCM can most likely simply be reprogrammed to fix the issue and doesn't have to be replaced, but your mechanic may not have the tools to do it. It may require a trip to the dealer.
If you do end up needing a PCM, let me know the serv code on the label on your existing PCM. I have 2 or 3 spares sitting in my garage that may fit your car, but they it would still need to be programmed.
