2003 LS. No fancy push starts or anything back then, just a car key. I took it off my key chain to go warm up my car yesterday and be able to keep the fob with me so I could lock the car. I got to work and somehow dropped it in the slush and snow that is everywhere around here and it's no where to be found. Luckily I still had my second from when I bought the car so I was able to get that brought to me and get home.

So, if I never do find this other key how do I get a new spare made? Is this something I have to go back to the dealer for or can I go to a locksmith of some sort? I have never needed an extra car key so I am unsure of what the normal steps are to get a replacement.

Go to a GM dealer with the title, or papers to prove you own the car. They should only charge you for the key. If they try to charge extra to look up the vin to get the key code, they are thieves. GARY

Do other places make them besides dealers? Like Home Depot or something?

And yeah, I still have the second one that came with the car.

The dealer may actually be your best bet short of a locksmith. I haven't had much success having keys copied for my car since I bought it used without the original keys and they were always a copy of a copy, which ended up pissing off the Passlock system a LOT.

Once I took a key to a locksmith and had fresh keys cut (the dealer will do the same thing for more $$), all my Passlock problems went away. As the key wears you will start to develop problems as well, as the Passlock sensor is more sensitive than the lock cylinder (the key can be good enough to turn but the resistance to the sensor will start changing and you won't be able to start your car).

Thieves? Have you ever charged a person for services rendered?

I ended up going to Home Depot.

Cost under two bucks.

I dread the day when I have to go to a chipped key.
