I bought a tail light that has factory LED with reflectors

it's from a 04 or 05 Toyota prius got for only 5$ (I have not tested it)

do you think 3LEDs per side would be enough? these leds are extremely bright

since it's a OEM type

if you are using the entire factory (Toyota) reflector, the LED's that came with it should be bright enough since thats what they use.

if you are going to use just the LED's and scrap the Toyota reflector, you will get "hot spots" from the lack of a reflector.

each LED has it's own little reflector
