Recently bought a 2005 Impala ( through an auction ) that was part of a local hospital's security vehicle fleet . It has 79,000 miles and is in pretty good shape with the one exception , at start-up it has a slight clicking sound which I believe to be a lifter ? It usually gets better after warming up , sometimes going completely away ! But it always returns to some extent though it is never severe . I'm thinking of selling the car as I got it at a great price and think there is profit to be made . But the clicking is likely to scare off any potential buyers . Anyone have a similar experience or knowledge they can share ? There is a " check engine " light showing but I haven't had the opportunity to have it scanned so I don't have any info on that . Any and all help will be truly appreciated !

3.4, its in the title

Could be a few things, but if its going away, could be a leaking lifter thats getting pumped up eventually

Post a video of it on photobucket? Are you a dealer: you may not make a profit if you have to add in ttl. IDK what you got it for. At any rate, if you live near an auto parts store, they will usually rent the scan tool or check it onsite for you. always a good idea to see what that is or you may scare buyers away. Lifter tick is common in cold but goes away after its warmed up. If it is a sound that it dependent on RPM you may have bearing issues - relatively low miles but you never know what happened and anything can happen.

My 3.4 used to do this then I started using RP and it quieted a little. These engine can have a little valvetrain noise too on start up.

This. OP, see if you can get a video of the noise so we can tell you if it's worse than what you would normally expect with the 3400.
