I recently installed a set of eBay low beam HID's in my 2001 Impala LS. I first installed the kit which used the existing car wiring and had problems with one or both HID's not starting up. Then I bought a relay harness from eBay and hooked that up but still had a problem with sometimes only one HID lighting up. Then I figured the ballasts from eBay were cheap China crap so I bought a good set of Morimoto 3Five ballasts and installed them. Still have a problem with sometimes only one of the HID's fire up. Seems to be random on one side or the other. This morning only one of the HID's fired up but I then pulled the manual headlight switch on and off and it then caused both of HID's to fire up.

I wonder if there is something with the Impala headlight AUTO-ON circuit that the HID's don't like?
Any ideas or experience with this?
Can the headlight AUTO-ON feature be disabled?

I had DDM HID's in my Low Beam's for two years. Never had a problem. I had a cheap relay harness too. Worked great. I know that this does not answer your question but thought that I would let you know I did nothing except Install the Relay harness and DDM HID's and it worked great for two yeas until I took them out to sell the car.
I still have the DDM Slim kit and harness If any one is interested in it? P.M. me

I had a problem with my DDM kit where both bulbs would not fire up at the same time - they would flick on and one would go out after half a second. After one the one side completely warmed up I pulled the headlight switch out and put it back in and the other bulb would fire up.

I was using a relay harness from day one - I think it was just a bad ballast or bulb. DDM had me return both ballasts and bulbs and they sent me new ones under warranty and I haven't had any problems since.

Sounds exactly the same as my problem... But I replaced my cheap eBay ballasts with high quality Morimoto 3Five ballasts ($110) and I still have the problem... I am still using the cheap eBay relay harness and eBay HID's... For another $70 I can buy a quality relay harness and quality HID's... I became suspicious of the Impala headlight AUTO-ON circuit when I saw that pulling the manual headlight switch out and in caused an un-lighted bulb to fire up... But schematically that doesn't seem to make sense... With the relay harness you're only using one side of the OEM headlight harness to switch a relay on and off... Then power to both ballasts comes directly from the battery... Of course this morning both bulbs fired up perfectly!...

Need to get a low voltage regulator. HIDs hate not having 12v all the time. At least that was my problem. they didn't work unless it was dark out and that was because the day time running lights run at half voltage. What the low voltage regulator will do is when it sees anything below 12v it'll put 12 volts to it. Now I have no problem whatsoever!!!
