2001 Chevrolet Impala

PostPosted: Thu Oct 17, 2013 9:47 am    Post subject:  should I keep fixing my car, or... Reply with quote

Hello,
My 2001 LS has 150k miles and still runs OK. The body and suspension are solid. Not including transmision work, I have a list of needed repairs to do which will cost about $750.
The transmission works, but has made a whinning noise and bucks when it shifts for the past 20k miles.
Questions:
(1) Should I do the repairs and hope for the tranny to keep working?
(2) does the whinning indicate near end of life for the tranny?
(3) is there a low cost fix for the trans whinning & bucking?
Thank you!!

Have you replaced the ATF & filter at all? After the car has been running for a while pull the trans dipstick & smell the ATF. Does it smell foul? Is it pink or brown? GARY

That was 50,000 miles ago. I'd still look at, & smell the ATF. GARY

Thank you!!

That's gonna be it for your transmission. I wouldn't even change the fluid at this point, the fresh fluid is gonna dissolve whatever gunk is holding your transmission together...

The cheapest solution is to do the work yourself. I have had to replace 2 pcs solenoids on my trans so far. Check out tep. They get it right the 1st time.

sure it's the transmission? the power steering(at lower speeds noticeable), bad belts makes a whining noise as well .

Yeah usually the trans flush is all it takes to destroy the tranny, I have a feeling it's the power steering.
