My Indy has been down for a week and the issue is bad fuel. I bought some fuel from a Valero and I mean frankly life happens. I bought some bad fuel and it showed when I tried to crank the car that night. I siphoned all the old fuel as there was nothing but water and a brown film with brown chunks in the gas. The fumes were weak and it barely ignited when lit. I bought about a 1/4 tank and put 2 bottles of HEET in the tank and let it sit overnight. It crank and Ran kinda put puttn along for a few feet. I put more gas into the car to balance out the HEET and it's basically full now. It turns over and tries to start. Then backfires through the fei and tailpipe. The fuel pump engages and all. Still no dice. I'm wondering if the spark plugs need to be change or maybe new injectors. Any help or guesses would be great. I don't want to damage the engine. I've missed a week of school and I can't afford to miss nor please help me.

The fuel pump has a sock on the inlet, if it's clogged the pump will starve for fuel. Check fuel pressure and flow rate. You may need to access the fuel pump to change the sock.

If the gas station sold you bad gas, they should be paying for a mechanic to fix your car. Have you spoken with the manager/owner of the gas station yet?

Surely you are not the only one having an issue. If I had to guess, they let the level in their tank get too low and haven't had the water pumped out out the tank properly.

This same thing happened to me when I went to Arkansas last April for a motorcycle trip. I think 9 out of the 10 bikes fueled bad gas. (The only reason why the 10th wasn't effected was because he fueled a very little amount) As soon as we got to the exit to leave the gas station bikes started shutting off. Long story short, after a lot of time spent with talking to the clerk and such he refunded us our money for the fuel. One of the guys that was with us has a mechanics shop and I think he sent them an invoice for all of the work we had to do on the bikes to get the bad gas out of them. Since its a Valero, they should pay for any damages. If they give you trouble, keep pressing them. Remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease. If they keep giving you the runaround, contact the BBB. They usually have done good work for me in the past. That's usually my last line of defense and it has not failed me yet. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions let me know.

No, the sock is not sold separately. I called Delphi and AC Delco back in the day when I was trying to fix an issue that I thought was the sock (and ended up being a fuel filter). I think the only separate component sold in the fuel sending unit is the level sender.
