Take your ignition lock cylinder out. You will see a flat metal piece on the lock cylinder itself, Its sort of wedged in there. Underneath the flat metal piece are the springs and tumblers. Each tumbler has a number on it. Starting from the tumbler closest to the key hole is the first number in the code. Should have 8 tumblers. May have to rub them clean, they get kinda dirty in there. But they WILL have numbers on each tumbler. Just take that number to your dealer and have it cut. I think a key is about $35-$45. Just hold your finger on the ones you don't want to come out when you turn it over to make the tumblers fall out. If you mix the letters up, you'll never know. Believe me, I know from experience...

That is freaking insane. Here in Florida, you just go to the parts dept with the registration to prove you own the car. They will enter the VIN in their computer, & they will provide you with the code for free. You can purchase a key cut for the code for the cost of a key. Been there, done that. Am I to assume this is a Brooklyn thing? Who owns the dealer. Tony Soprano?

Not defending them, but its the cost of doing business in NY. Salaries, taxes, insurance, building costs, utilities are all higher. And Im not talking 10%, Im talking 200-300% if not more.

I'd try another dealer where real estate isn't so pricy, or call the Zone office to complain. To the OP. Make sure you go to the parts dept, not the service dept for the key. Service writers are paid by commission only, whereas parts employees make a salary with a commission bonus, & are not so dependent on ripping everybody off. I have a friend in Brooklyn who actually was charged for the spare tire in his new car. GARY

Thanks, will give it a try this weekend. I'll never buy another used car from a dealer without the key code.

Yeah man, try another dealership. It doesn't need to be Chevy.

$125 is pretty steep. We only charge $25. Maybe they do it to deter people. LOL

I hope someone can help the OP. Several years ago, a deputy sheriff came by the parts department to remind all the employees to never make a key from code for anybody unless they provided documentation to prove they owned the car. He also reminded us of the stiff penalties for doing so. If the OP lived in Florida local to me, it would be free. GARY
