Here's a good one for you... This weekend I installed a set of HID lights (low beams) in my 2001 LS... Each HID light requires a ballast to ignite and run them... I have my car set to blink the headlights when I press the lock or unlock button on my key FOB... I notice now that when I start the car my AC button light is on and the AC is on, even though I did not have it turned on the last time I ran the car... I am guessing that the HID ballasts emit some pretty bad RFI and EMI and it's getting in the cars wiring somewhere to trigger the AC to turn on??

I experienced the same issue with my 2001 Impala when I installed HID's. Soon as you turn the vehicle on or if you manually turn the lights on in the daytime. You could probably make a faraday cage around the ballasts to eliminate the RFI's that come from the ballasts

Did you have the exactly the same problem as I described? The AC button lit and the AC on without pressing the button? Did you have any other weird things?

I have some snap-on ferrite beads that I can snap around the wires coming out of the ballasts... They act as RF chokes... Sometimes effective, sometimes not... I also want to directly ground the cases of the ballasts... Right now I just used the double sided tape to mount them on the cross member (metal bumper) behind the front grill...

Turn that off, it's bad for HID.

Cheap Chinese electronics are always noisy, and if you don't ground those ballasts right they're toast.

I'd ground the cases. I had one set that was metal cases and had to be grounded to the frame so when I installed those I had no issue with the A/C turning on... when I purchased a new set they were plastic cases with double sided tape and had nothing but issues... Bad radio signals that I normally got in perfect and also the A/C button turning on at random anytime the headlights came on when the car thought it was dark out or if I manually turned them on.

I agree completely with this. I turned mine off because I read that the headlight flash was bad for the HID Bulbs and basically destroys their life span significantly.

Yup on all...

I have turned off the key FOB headlight blink feature...

I have some snap-on ferrite beads that I will use on the power lines coming out of the ballast... (might do something to choke some of the emitted RFI, might not)

I plan on directly bonding (grounding) the metal cases of the ballasts with grounding braid... Haven't done this yet...

Also shopping for higher quality ballasts to replace the China crap...

Thanks!

How did you turn the head blinking off? Is it off completely? (no blinking when locking or unlocking?)

By turning off the FOB LIGHT feature thru the vehicle customization settings that can be set using the stock radio.

Yes, it is off completely.

Damn, I don't have the stock radio anymore. Thanks though.
