Got an 05 impala ss and the trunk doesn't pop up at all . My 04 monte ss sc pops up a little and its not too bad to open . The impala sucks . Is it just me . The struts seem to be good bc they held the trunk in half open position .

any ideas or are all ss's like this with the heavy rear spoiler and the tail light covers?

On my 05LS, there used to be a plastic/rubber block on a spring that would "pop" the trunk up a bit. It broke off so it doesn't pop up anymore, which I actually prefer...

Its located right beside where the trunk lid latches.

None of the trunks on any W-body I ever had popped up more than enough to slip a finger under the edge and lift up the trunk.

Mine would pop maybe an inch and a half when I first got it, but now it might hop a quarter inch. Mind you, I'm in and out of the trunk constantly so it's probably well worn.

Not to spud repetitive but mine doesn't pop up much either. Goes up maybe at the most half an inch. I too have the ss spoiler and taillight cover. Just make sure you don't life from the spoiler because it will crack easily after a while. Mine did Sad

I think the issue is lack of lubrication sine the rubber seal gets sticky and does not allow it to pop up normally silicone grease should be fine without damaging it . OR you can get the gm stuff if you want Rolling Eyes

So the parts cashier does not think you hopped up on drugs heres the part #10131290

If you do get ANY of that silicone grease on your interior trim, make sure to wipe it off immediately.

my spring loaded thing works but the rubber is sticky preventing it from popping up.

I highly recommend cleaning the area were the rubber touches before applying it.

From my research, this is mainly caused by weak trunk struts, with some impact due to misaligned latches due to rear-end impacts ( Rolling Eyes ).

The original Stabilus struts seem to have a spring inside them that "pops" the trunk about 1" open, on mine it did this for the first 8 or so years. Then it gets weak and doesnt pop anymore, and it takes more effort to lift the trunk up but it will still hold it up for the most part.

So there are 3 functions of these struts, to pop the trunk open, to minimize the effort needed to raise it, and to hold the trunk up. The pop function will go bad first, followed by the lift function, and lastly it wont hold the trunk up at all.

The correct struts will swing the trunk open with only a little help from your hand.

Do NOT buy aftermarket struts! I got some at Advance, but they only performed the holding-up part right, there was no pop or lifting help. GM OEM struts are around $40-50 each at the dealer, and $30-40 online.

Good luck! Very Happy

So Stabilus cylinders it is. Had this problem and thought it was just normal.

Hmmm... mine never 'popped up' and I got the car when it was 3 years old. Very interesting... wish I knew it wasn't normal at the time.

The Black block is spring loaded and is called a Lock striker
Its job is to separate the locking mechanisms when released.(I.E. pushes the trunk lid up a bit)
Name is appropriate as mine went on strike in 06

Friday night I removed something from the trunk, & didn't slam it shut as I meant to put the item back. I forgot & went to dinner, & drove 20 miles with the trunk "unlocked". After I got home I remembered the trunk was not latched shut, so I went outside, & slammed it shut. Never a noise or anything while I was driving to dinner. When I open the trunk, the struts do keep the lid opened. On my GF's Monte Carlo, the trunk lid would have bounced around. GARY
