On a 2003 Impala, 3.4L, what is inside the aluminum housing into which the right CV axle goes (inner side)? Is that the differential? or the "final drive" (that's what a transmission shop told me over the phone)?

My wife brought the car home with a hole in it, trans fluid leaking everywhere. Oops. Laughing I would post a picture, but the car is setting in a puddle of trans fluid and it's raining...

Any thoughts on the average cost to repair?

Thanks.

Yes, it is the differential or final drive same thing as you're concerned. Junk yard best bet. Repair not worth it. Cool

If you can, fix it yourself or throw in a used trans.

If you can't and you plan to have the car a while get a trans from triple edge performance

Kudos to the suggestions for tripleedgeperformance.com. They were able to ship me a new final drive and tail housing for less than a third of what the shop wanted to charge and they arrived in less than 24 hours. The parts are on the car and working beautifully. Thumbs up.

Thanks for everyone's help.
