A co-worker has a 2002 Impala, 3.4L... She was driving down the road and heard something fall off her car... Looked in her mirror and saw a large piece of sheet metal on the road... She picked it up and put it in her trunk... It is about 18" long and U-shaped... (I forgot to take a pic)... Is this the heat shield over the CAT??

Probably from the cat/resonator area.

Not sure what else could be 18 inches long lol

Heat shield from the resonator - it'll look like half of a tube, about a foot and a half long, and may have visible spot welds at the edges on the long side.

You may notice more heat along the 'trans tunnel' , but I doubt there is any real fire risk because of it - my buddy's fell off two years ago and there's been no ill effects.

Resonator heat shield. Don't worry about it. Cool

Yep. The spot welds don't seem to hold up well, especially in areas that get snow and the associated road salt/brine.
