When I picked up my 05 Impala, I went to Home Depot to get copies made. $2.35 each, & they work perfectly w/o any kind of programming. However, when I got a spare key for my gf's 06 Monte Carlo from the dealer, it wouldn't start the car until I programmed the spare key. Is this normal? GARY

Police cars don't use interlocks, chip keys, or security of any kind.

I can't speak for the 06, but the 05 will work just fine with a copy and no programming provided the key is accurately cut.

Thanks. I too love "quality cheese burgers". These days, Home Depot makes great keys for $2.35, Get the 14R2 blank. GARY

06+ use Passkey 3 instead of Passlock. has a RFID chip inside the key. Little more secure than the old Passlock. I had 3 cheap dollar store keys that worked just fine on my 2002.

If it is a key that has an rfid in it then you will most likely not be able to get it to work in the car if it is bought from a home depot, as most of the keys they carry don't contain the chip.

Agreed. I had a bunch of keys cut for the Monte Carlo over the years and the only time I had to do the security relearn was when I changed out the ignition cylinder.

Actually, they did. And they even had a box on top of the key machine to copy the code from the original key to the newly cut key. But on my gf's 06 MC, I inserted the original key, turned the key to on, waited 5 seconds, then removed the key. I then inserted the real GM copy, turned the key to on, waited 5 seconds, & removed it. It now starts the car, which it never did before. GARY

00-05 have the security chip inside the tumbler, so it just used simple keys.

06+ has the chip in the key, so it costs much more to replace.
