Did anyone else get a Catalytic Converter reimbursement notice from GM for their 2002 Impala?

Got mine yesterday, 9/25/05, GM is extending the coverage to 10 years or 120000 miles, 3.4 and 3.8 engines.

You will be reimbursed if you had it done already, or GM will replace converter free of charge if (or should I say WHEN) it fails... Neutral

I got mine on Saturday too. The Recall envelope is missleading since it is not a Recall just a Reimbursment form. It is a croch of S. I am out of warranty and I wouldn''t let the dealer touch my car for the money they charge doing work on it.

When it''s time for a cat replacement, you can bet the farm I am not going with an OEM unit!!! They can warranty it for 20 years for all I care.

Good to know for anyone that paid out of pocket for a replacement though!

Is this an on-going problem with the cat. converts. or was is only the 2002 Models that have this problem?

What would be a good after market converter, and what would I expect to pay for one?

Just to give you an idea, I work at a small dealership in Kansas, no less. On average, we do about one to two converters a month. So I imagine the big city dealerships do many more than that. To put this into perspective, this involves Buick and Pontiac as well. To include the 3.1L motor and years from 00-03.

$$$$ That''s gotta hurt $$$$

I have a 2001 and got the same letter yesterday. You are right the envelope is misleading. At first I thought it was a recall.

I wonder if it will include my 2000?. I am beginning to think that is why my mileage is down lately even after induction clean and tuneup and new air filter and PC valve my mileage still isn''t where it was a year ago.

any 2003 people get a notice?

What is meant by lack of illumination of the MIL?

Would that have anything to do with my engine light flashing for a couple minutes, once i reached 4500 and it started running like crap, and then once it shifted the light went away?

They also mentioned possible reimbursment, if you''ve already gone and fixed the problem. I wonder if i bought my hi-flow cat, and brought it to a shop to have them replace it, if they would cover that cost, as long as it doesnt exceed the cost of replacing a stock one.
I think you added lack by mistake. It means the check engine light came on. Light flashing is a misfire, probably those crappy fuel injectors, try seafoam
<-----------------------------------
I would get the new hi flow cat, and ask the shop to date the bill for last month Wink

Screw the High dollar OEM I went for a Aftermarket Hi Flow Cat. The only down fall is that the PCM doesn''t recognize the aftermarket cat and leaves the Check Engine Indicator light on. I have changed the Upstream o2 sensor and still get the dam light. I have learned to live with it constantly on.

Well i have heard that the w-body cat is one of the highest flowing cats there is from the factory per L&M Muffler in Desoto. They had a guy come in and get header back exhaust and it threw a light so they put a different kind of cat on it and it went away. He said the cat they replaced the new 1 with was the highest flowing they had and he had though the 1 that they put on originally would have worked since the car had just a V6 but he was wrong. So it may be a case Shade that the aftermarket cat you put on may actually flow less than the stock. The other cat that I think ZZP sells is magnaflow which they say is the only aftermarket cat sold that won''t throw a code so who knows. I don''t have a cat so I ain''t worried about it. But it might be worth checking into. Have you scanned to see what the code is? I''ll be in Arlington 1st part of next week to look at a house I could swing by or meet ya somewhere and scan it and temp. delete it so you can find out exactly what is wrong. You should be able to go to the exhaust shop that did it and tell them their cat is causing the light to go off and they need to put a higher flowing one on to meet or exceed OEM. There is a site somewhere were they tested the stock exhaust system and found the whole thing only to starve the car of 40 horse power as compared to the car running open headers. The cat had 10-15 of that, the res. had 2-5 and the rest was manis, mufflers, and small piping. Thats the main reason i dropped the cat and going to leave everything else alone as the cat made the biggest difference. Considering that wow I wonder how restrictive other vehichles cats are?

Just curious, with the hi-flow cat and the o2 sim, the check engine light is off. Will the car pass an emissions inspection:? Confused2
