2004 Chevrolet Impala

PostPosted: Mon Mar 11, 2013 6:48 pm    Post subject:  Help with matching tires with rims Reply with quote

So I've been eyeing some rims on tirerack that I kinda want to get for the summer, and right now I have sitting in my basement the tires that came on my car, a set of 235/55/17's. The other night I looked a little more closely when going to match tires with these rims I want, and lo and behold it says I'm suppose to use 225-55-17's with these particular rims. Is it something to be concerned with? Should I look for another set of tires?

235/55R17 is actually what the 04-05 SS uses w/ 17" wheels. The 235s will work fine and will hold a little more weight than the 225s. The 225s actually hold less weight than the stock 16" tires.

the 235/55/17's will work great. Unless the wheels your looking at are 5" wide, your good to go

post up the wheel you are looking at so we can give you an answer. If the wheels are narrow for some reason, a narrower tire will be needed. Tirerack is usually spot on with their info though.

Some members had issues with rubbing on the lower spring perch in the rears. The 235 may be too wide for a non SS car because the rear struts are different.

IF you do rub, you can either use a BFH and "fix" the strut perch, get SS rear struts, or get the 225's.

so i just chatted with a guy from tirerack and he claims the 225/55/17 on their page for the recommended tire size for the wheels is a typo. so i'm good to go with my 235/55/17s i already have.

yeah, 225 is a little narrow for the 7.5 wide wheel. The 325's should fit nicely

try this for comparing....
