My 05 Impala 3800 has 145,000 miles, & I'm trying to decide what oil to use. In the past when my cars were big V-8's, I would use straight 40wt, as I live in Florida, & the temperature rarely goes below 60. That served me well, as I passed 250,000 miles on many cars. The engines outlived the cars. So my Impala is supposed to use 5-30. Now I could see using that if I still lived in Montreal, but for 140,000+ miles, will this give me good protection in the summer with 90+ temps. I don't need a "high mileage oil" which has extra detergents, or seal swellers, as my engine is spotless inside, & doesn't leak. Is 10-40 OK, or 10-30? Or just stick with the 5-30? The oil pressure is just fine at all temps. What do you guys who live in the south use? GARY

Stick with 30, you'll be fine. I run 10w-30

any good brand name full synthetic will do. I would definitely stick with a good filter though, NAPA gold or platinum, Baldwin, WIX.

If you haven't been running synthetic, don't switch now.

I don't plan to. I change my oil every 4-5000 miles, so synthetic is not necessary for me. I'm not really looking for a specific brand to use. Just wondering if I can go to a 10-40 oil, to make up for the 145,000 miles. GARY

look up bob is the oil guy on google and read. all answer to oil weight are contained there. as far as changing to synthetic, it's worth it and don't worry about leaks, that's just a myth carried over from the 80's.

I've used nothing but Shell dino oil in everything i've owned (from cars to heavy trucks) Think I read somewhere that 5-30 is the best over all blend to use in these engines.
