I have an '02 Impala 3.8L and have started having the hard shift problem. My current scanner gives me no codes though. Don't recall what the make or model is at the moment, but I've had it for a while. I assume I'm not getting codes because the scanner is just OBD II, but not enhanced. It will give DTCs when I have a CEL on though.

I'm thinking of purchasing an Innova 3120 or 3150 to check for transmission codes. The model claims to give enhanced DTCs and tranny codes.

Just wondering if I'm likely to see a code with one of these or if I'm wasting my time/money?

I've put the transgo shift kit in btw, and things have improved in that the tranny shifts hard less often but it still does it. I've read through all the tripleedge.com info also. I'm considering going in and replacing all the solenoids but would like to know what the codes are ahead of time. I've thought of going to a dealer or shop to get the codes read, but would rather just buy a capable scanner if it will do the job.

Any comments as far as scanners go, and being able to read tranny codes?

FWIW, my Aeroforce and my cheap Actron scanner both picked up the P1811 when my transmission finally s**t the bed. That being said, it was acting up for years before it finally threw the code, so YMMV.

The car? Sold it after the transmission blew up the second time...

Sold the Aeroforce, but I still use the Actron for other people's car problems.

it may not be throwing a code, thats why the scanner isnt picking anything up. Cant hurt to have to scanned for free at a parts place or a trusted shop to see.

Yeah, I meant what did you do to fix it. Sounds like your tranny was toast at that point.

It needed a full rebuild after it threw the code. The shop botched the rebuild (underfilled the rebuilt trans by 4 quarts) and it chewed itself up again. Had it rebuilt under the shop warranty and dumped the car because I didn't trust the work that had been done. If you do need a rebuild, make sure to find a reputable shop.

Agreed. Had I gone with TEP, I'd still have my Monte Carlo... still kicking myself for not going that route.

I will probably go the TEP route if it comes to needing a rebuild.

I just checked my scanner. It is a KAL equip 9040A OBD II, about 10 years old that I used to scan on a 97 Blazer for trans problems. On the Blazer the CEL came on and was throwing the P1870 code. That was a lot easier fix. I just replaced the valve body with a rebult one for $100. My Impala has 138k and I haven't needed to scan it other than for a high coolant temp problem due to a stuck thermostat. I'll check with local parts stores to see if they do free scanner loans and see if I can pick up up a code. Otherwise I'll probably dive into dropping the trans and replacing the solenoids.

Just so you know, autozone and the like places you can have them scan it while you are there for free and they'll tell you what codes come up, if any.
