Well the last three times I've driven the impala I've noticed a burning smell but can't figure out where it's coming from. I just changed the transmission fluid, and it's not leaking and is full. Nothing that I can see from the engine bay that's leaking. It just smells like a super hot smell, somewhat like a hot glue gun at times. The car hasn't been really hot either when this happens. The first time I noticed it going into a parking garage after being on the freeway and traffic, temp gauge read about half. The other two times temp was between quater and half.
I looked underneath, and did notice something. There's oil or grease directly behind the transmission? Is this the rack and pinion leaking? You think this is causing the smell, like splattering on the engine or something?
Any other ideas?

I've driven it several hundred miles since. I'd say 400-500

I wonder if your CAT is starting to go and the two problems are not related.

Is that what is smells like when a cat is clogged? Under the hood just smells like a strong REALLY hot smell. And in the car it smells like that and occasionally kinda like a hot glue gun.

Did some research, everyone says to look for a plastic bad burnt on the exhaust. Well I didn't find anything. But did find I'm slowly leaking some transmission fluid so I'll re torque the bolts and see if that doesnt fix it. What does burning transmission fluid smell like?

could be fluid hitting the exhaust and burning either from spilling it or something of that nature. If there's no smoke, I'd say it could be your alternator going from overcharging the system which heats the wires up like a mother which would smell like burning.

Found out what the smell was. Somehow a piece of duct tape found its way to the side of my crossover pipe and decided to melt Laughing Scraped off what I could, the rest I guess will just have to burn off
