My 01 impala LS is having an issue with randomly not starting. I know this is a much discussed issue with a few youtube videos as will. I just need a confirmation before I drop some money on the part.

Car - 01 LS 3.8 with 171K miles
Problem. Turn key to start all lights come on as normal (Security Light is sometimes on). Turn to the start position all lights radio fan etc go off like normal. But, nothing happens. engine doesn't crank - nothing.

If I take the key out turn it over, do a hope the car starts dance, pray, etc . . it will sometimes start with no problem.

This seems to be an issue as it gets cooler. It normally has no problems during the summer.

Is this the passlock housing with the sensor the holds the ignition cylander going bad? Or should I look at something else.

Thanks!

Side note -
Also thinking of trying the 2200 ohm bypass prior to dropping $100+ on the passlock housing or cylender lock.

If this is indeed the issue.

crossing fingers.

Does the security light show up in the instrument cluster when it fails to start?

Do you have a 2nd key? Try getting a new key cut 1st as the cheapest route, maybe the dealer can cut you one from the code, Sounds more like the key itself & cylinder are getting some wear if it starts better with the key turned over. Question- do you have alot of weight on the key ring (lots of extra keys) because this can wear out the ignition cylinder.

It could also be your battery cables...or the ignition switch (not the cylinder). Needs more diagnosis and trial and error of checking and fixing different things.

I'm waiting on it to do it again. It's decided to cooperate for the time being.
I am going to install a Altinator power cable, just to see if it has the claimed improvements.

I'm pretty sure the security light does come on when the no start is happening. I'll varify when it happens next.

I've had the issue happen with my key and my wifes spare key. The valleys and ridges on her key are still nice and defined.

I had a similar problem with my 04 pala SS. but it was because i had bought a new key and i guess the guy who made it didnt get the security chip correct. So once every month it will not turn on. But i went back and he corrected that issue.
