So after an entire summer of having my friend help me work on my impala, doing various things performance, maintainence, and speaker related he's trying to find an impala for himself. He's looking for a 7th gen impala with at least the 3.8, but he'd rather get an SS if he can find one. Does anyone in the tri-state area know of any impalas like this being sold? his budget is 4k

4k for an SS? I dunno about that. If you can even find one at that price, I'm not so sure I'd take it.

I think to find an LS in decent shape (but higher miles), you're probably looking at 5k or more. For an SS, you're probably looking at 8k or more. Expect higher for lower miles.

he's not worried about how many miles are on the car. he works at a garage and they have a ton of spare parts to rebuild a 3800 laying around.

It's not the 3.8 we're worried about as they're pretty stout and nearly indestructible imo from the factory, it's that slushbox 4T65e attached to it.

Agreed. As SS at 4k is gonna be absolutely beaten to hell.

It's a good thing he can turn his own wrenches. Older W-bodies become money pits in a hurry.

The motors have flaws too, but yes, in general the damn transmission is the biggest problem. I went through 2 before finally pulling the plug on my Monte Carlo.

I send plenty of Impalas to auction in the area, can't be that hard to find a piece. Problem areas in used Impalas that look "good" at auction tend to be oil in coolant and coolant consumption, related catalyst failure, pan and valve cover leaks, transmission failure, and age related issues like bad ball joints, tie rods, steering rack, rear suspension links, wheel bearings, struts, cracking seats, that smell, computer failure, poor fit and finish from factory that just gets worse, poor air conditioning, and bad fuel senders and pumps. Most of those problems aren't that hard for an auction company or a Buy Here Pay Here lot to render invisible to the average buyer. Buying an Impala is a lot like buying a rescue dog from Michael Vick's house, you never know when it'll bite you in the balls.
