Does anyone have a how to on how to replace fuel injectors on a 2000 3.8? Pics would be great and what is the degree of difficulty. I'm thinking of replacing all six of mine. I'm having a few issues I believe replacing the injectors would probably solve.

Thanks Joe......

Take off the engine cover, release the pressure of the fuel system using a towel wrapped over the schrader valve and a screwdriver.

Then you unscrew the screws holding the fuel rail on, unplug the injectors (I believe the clips that you pull are blue?), pop off the rail, then you just unclip the injectors and replace, being VERY CAREFUL not to tear either the upper or lower o-rings.

I think I have a good Idea as to how I can take the the fuel rial off. I know I have to undo some of the wire harness and move it out of the way and try to find the bolts that hold down the rail. But any other tricks or tips I should know about?

Injectors are pretty steeply priced, if I recall correctly.... not something I would replace all 6 of without knowing being positive. Are you sure the injectors are the problem?

Removing the fuel rail is pretty straight forward. Have some clean shop towels and an elastic ready to cleanup fuel and "cap" the line to prevent stuff getting into it while you're working. As mentioned above, be careful with the injectors and o-rings... the last thing you want is to discover a fuel leak once you've re-assembled everything and started the car up.

The clips to undo the injectors are blue, and there is a trick, but it's been a while since I removed mine last. If I remember, I will lookup my LIM thread and see if I can figure out what it was. I think the clips were hard to get moving, and I separated the blue part completely from the injector when I did them.

I have some friends who can get them fairly cheap. their in the business, other wise I would dig deep into diagnoses and pinpoint the particular ones. I heard the make some kind of removal tool to get those clips out. But then some say you really don't need them, you just have to be careful and patient. I am just trying to gather as much information as I can before I tackle this and I appreciate all the info. I'm getting here..... But please by all means keep the tips coming..

Thanks......

For reference, any discussion I've ever had here about injectors is within these two links.

The clips were impossible for me to get off. I would like to know this trick too.

It's already dark and cold out, and I don't think I can see much with everything assembled.

All I remember is, I was sure I was gonna snap those little blue clips into little tiny peices. Took a lot of fiddling around to get the first one out, and it seemed to be tight until the moment it started moving, then it basically flew out.

Bolstered by the first success, I had the remaining ones out in about ten minutes.

Without seeing it again, I have to go by memory here.

I think I used a really small slotted screwdriver to get the clip moved out from the body of the injector, and a pair of needlenose pliers to pull it out (pulling in the direction of the length of the injector).

Hopefully I'm remembering right and this helps.

Thanks Guys, I have all your inputs and links saved for when I start to replace the injectors. Well Frank, My issue for the injectors witch I boiled down to, and I believe I had posted this before somewhere is This pesky hesitation I get on starting the eng. when its cold. Its starts up fine then about a half a minute or so it acts like its starving for fuel and bucks a bit. I have to rev it to about 2,500 rpm's for a bit and she's fine after that. Runs fine all day with no problems.

Only does it when the eng. is cold, other wise she runs like a top. This is what I have done to it recently: Took it to inspection and it wouldn't pass. O2 sensor issue, took care of that. Replaced EGR valve, removed and cleaned throttle body, replaced IAC, thoroughly cleaned the MAF sensor and cleaned all the EGR ports, all cleaned no carbon billed up. If I'm missing something that could lead to this hesitation problem please let me know. Right now the car is running fine so I'm buying myself a little time, but would like to get this done before it gets too cold out.

Thanks all........

Been down this road before.

Good diag costs less than throwing parts at what you think is the problem. I guarantee it.

If you want to do some diag yourself, start with the old school stuff. Take out the plugs and put some photographs on here. Then we can argue about it. It'll be fun.

I know you said you replaced the IAC, but that does sound like a faulting IAC to me. Perhaps the wiring is bad / the IAC was bad?

If the injector was the problem, you would think you would have more issues than just cold start.

Out of curiosity, what did you clean the MAF with? My buddy seafoamed his and subsequently had to replace it because the seafoam ate off the protective teflon.

Lingenfelter, I used CRC MAF Cleaner specifically for cleaning the MAF sensors. Using anything else will ruin the sensor. As for the injectors, Im not sure if that is really my problem. I guess I should look at my plugs, wires and possibly the coils. I'm just a little pressed for time and doing and taking care of these issues when I can, but surely before it gets too cold . But I have a more pressing issue this time with over heating. I noticed that my cooling fans are not coming on when they are supposed to and I get a CEL, put the scanner to it and got a PO480 code. When is it going to end? So I look further and it seems it might be a Cooling fan control relay. I look in the owners manual and its the relay in the middle of the panel. Haven't had the chance to look at it, since my wife has the car till late this evening. Any Ideas guys? I know one issue at a time, but they just seem to be piling up and I know I'm at the right place to ask questions. I do appreciate it.

To be continued.........
