I just drained my oil and it was milky, I know the 3.4 is bad for head gasket leaks. My question is should I change the intake and head gaskets? This engine came from a wreckers and has 120,000 km on it, so I don't know if they have been changed already. If it was a head gasket wouldn't I have white smoke coming out the tailpipe? if it was a intake gasket would coolant leak into the oil?. I'm thinking about doing the whole top end just for peace of mind.
Any suggestions.
Thanks
Jamie

It's relatively rare for a head gasket to go on the 3400 or 3800. I've only seen a handful that actually went bad in the many years I've been floating around this forum. Odds are it's a LIM gasket failure. I'd just do the LIM gasket unless you have a real reason to go after the head gaskets.

If they're fine I would just do the intake gaskets. Deal with valvetrain stuff.

The head gaskets aren't as rare on the 3400. They still arent a super common failure (like the LIM) but I've seen a lot more HG go on 3400 than 3800

I would buy the stuff for Intake manifold Replacement now.
Then Price and check availablity for Head gaskets and New Head bolts. ( local parts store).

Then after you have taken off the Intake manifold and the Intake gaskets don't look like they were the failure point, only then would I buy the head gaskets and new head bolts.

If the Intake gaskets look real bad and/or the Intake bolts were only finger tight. I would just do the Intake Gasket set.

When replacing Head Gaskets .. Replacing the Head bolts is Highly recommended because the Torque settings stress the bolt beyond safe use of the bolt a second time.
