I ran front speakers only in the Monte Carlo due to a bad amplifier for about a year before I sold it. Only downside I really noticed was decreased volume compared to when I had all 4. I'm not sure I would have done it by choice, but it was fine by me.

The front is what creates the better sound stage. If your just looking for a simple speaker sway to increase volume, I would do all 4 speakers, but if your really getting into it, focus on the front stage. This being said, I would still replace the 6x9's from stock, but the focus on better equipment should be up front. I personally don't like NOTHING for rear speakers

i upgraded my fronts and amped them. I left the rear speaker stock and left them connected to the factory amp. I am fine with leaving the stock 6x9s, but i am going to upgrade them eventually just because i have a 4 channel amp powering my fronts so i have an extra 2 channels..

If i was you, i would first do the fronts and see what it sounds like. It could save you time and money if you are satisfied with just the fronts being upgraded.

Rear speakers are really not necessary. In fact I just pulled my Eclipse SP8994 6x9's out.
