Ive been noticing that it sometimes take a second or two longer for the 2003 Impala base to start up. It starts every time, but im holding the key more.

I havent tested the battery, but I will look there.
Also, I noticed blue smoke coming from the exhaust for the first time today upon starting. It hasnt done it since. I let the car run for a bit too, and watched it. No smoke.

I need the car, my SS..........it was hit Crying or Very sad
Totally not cool.

THanks for any input

pete

Blue smoke could be caused by a clogged PCV valve, a bad head gasket, or bad piston rings. Long start could be caused by multiple things as well, I'd check fuel pressure.

Blue smoke is engine oil, probably bypassing a ring or gasket somewhere and getting into the combustion chamber.

The delay in starting I would assume is the battery getting weak. I replaced the battery in my 2003 in early 2009, they say 6-7 years is a good life for a battery so if yours is still original, I'd say you got a great run out of it.

I agree, blue smoke could well be (and probably is) the rings allowing oil to pass into combustion chamber which in turn, could be fouling the spark plugs slightly, causing longer start (crank) time. Cool

This gets better, not sure if anything related to the possible rings going, but...

Sometimes the car shudders a bit when driving gear to gear. It happens on turns, straight just accellerating and its not a major shutter like a torque converter gone bad, almost feels like the engine isnt bolted down howerver I looked at the mounts, all tight. and no leaks.

Also....if my rings are going, which makes sense.....how much estimated in a range would it be to repair the problem? I know shop to shop varies

replacing rings is basically a rebuild

Just drive it like it is for now, and keep checking your oil. I've never had an engine completely die just because the rings let a little oil by. But the longer it goes, the longer it's gonna take to start your car, until you change plugs. But that's just a temporary bandaid, and 6 months later it's gonna start acting up again.

I think oil seeping by the valve stems allowing oil into the combustion chamber is more likely than the rings being bad.

Blue smoke on start up is usually valve guide oil seals. Oil leaks down the valve stem and at start up it burns off, not really a problem if it runs ok. The oil seals can be changed if you remove the rockers and springs. I use Bar's Leaks in my '97 gp for a front main leak, works well with no ill effects. It swells gaskets and seals so the don't leak as much. I only use 1/3 bottle per oil change. May be worth considering.

Edit: see lostwrench above
