Hey guys, my dad is leaning towards the differential in the transmission. I get a harsh shake, which shakes the entire car, especially the steering wheel, and also you can hear a noise associated with it.

Can anyone give me signs of a bad differential? We just changed out both CV Axles thinking that was it, (passenger side was completely dry and was in need of being replaced), but it didn't fix the problem.

Please help, I want to have an idea to the problem before I take it back to the trans shop.

Well if its not the cv axles, shaking while accelerating sound like differential or transmission. Its gotta be something in the drivetrain if its only while accelerating, and fwd only has tranny, diff and axles.

We think we narrowed it down to either the diff, or the torque converter. Leaning more towards the torque converter because you can put the car in "2" and accelerate all the way up to 80 and it is smooth as anything. Put it in Drive or "3" when the torque converter locks up at 35, and then OD at 45, etc and it will start the violent shake.

I used the torque app on my Android and watched the TCC Slip RPM's and when in 3rd gear lock up, it is almost perfect the highest I saw the TCC Slip RPMs go was around 25-30. Second it goes into 4th (OD), the oscillation begins and I can watch it go from 40-150 slip rpms.

Looks like she's gonna get dropped off at the shop when we go on our cruise in two weeks, if she makes it that long.

Sounds like the same problem I had. Can you watch the RPMs bounce up and down bit when it happens? If it happens in 3rd and 4th, it's probably related to the torque converter in some manner.

yep, between 40 and 70 mph I can watch the rpms bounce 300ish rpms when in lockup, along with the shudder. which the oscillation and shudder gets worse when trying to accelerate when in 3rd or 4th lockup. looks like the tq converter is on its way out. sucks but hey at least I have a warranty.
