gonna do an oil change today, or maybe tomorrow, I usually go to jiffy lube to get oil changes...why? well because thats how ive grown up as no one in my family really does car maintenance, but being that my car has been the most troublesome out of all the cars we have, i figured i would be more diligent and learn what should be done to keep my car in the best (running) shape possible. So any recs on a type of motor oil...or any to stay away from?...also oil filters. Any help is appreciated, thanks

I have a 2002 3.4l btw

glad to see you taking an interest in doing your own car maintenance, I would recommend Valvoline full synthetic 5w-30 and stick with an ACDelco oil filter, good luck!
why is 5w-30 better than 10w-30 which the factory recommends?
5w-30 is recommended for 3.4 and newer build 3.8 l engines 2004 and newer.

Older years, 1995 thru 2003, it was recommended by the Factory to use 10w-30 because several clearences in the engine were greater than the tighter clearence in the newer engines 2004 and newer.

I think the clearence change was sometime around 2004 or 2005 ..

If you live in a climate that has really cold temps in the winter... 5w-30 or even 0w-30 will make sense for those sub zero cold start mornings.

I'm guessing by the year, that you probably have good mileage on your car. I would suggest that you dont go with synthetic oil uless it's already in there. The switch over may well cause leaks to occur. Cool
