Yes there is a heater core. Lucky you don't have to take the whole dash out. Remove the lower dash panels, lower air duct, and the heater core lower panel. Drain coolant and remove the hoses to the heater core which are the two hoses coming out of the firewall. Just a suggestion, remove 1 hose (upper one) then using compressed air blow out the heater core. That will save you a mess upon removeal. Take out the heater core and replace. For a reference diagram, go to gmpartsdirect.com and take a look at the parts diagram. That will show you all the screws you have to take out of the hvac unit.
