Yesterday I heard some scrapping sounds when turning from the passenger side wheel area. So reached down to see if rotor backing plate on the rear wheel might be touching the rotor and causing the noise..To my surprise a piece of it fell off in my hands. It's about 2 inches by 2 inches big from the outer dust shield section near the bottom of the plate. Should I be concerned ? It doesn't have any impact on braking. The scrapping noise is gone though. It's a 2000 LS. Thanks.

Nope.

They are notorious for rusting away on the 99-2003 Silverado/Sierra with rear disc brakes as well.
