Just had my 2001 LS in a local shop for NYS inspection... I get the dreaded call from the mechanic that the car needs a couple of things to pass inspection... Here's what he told me:

1.) Front Lower Control Arm Bushings need to be replaced.
2.) Rack & Pinion assembly is leaking (boot ripped?) and needs to be replaced.
3.) After #1 & #2 is done needs an alignment.

The shops price for the above is $1300... I thought this was crazy so I took the car out of his shop... Of course, he removed the existing inspection sticker since it was expired by 1 day...

Any thoughts or advice for me?

Don't wait until the last minute to get your inspection/emissions test done. I got burned last year by waiting...

Aside from that, you can tackle the controls arms on your own if you have jackstands and half a brain for about 120 bucks. I'm not sure about the steering rack as I've never done it, but I'd assume you could find a shop that would do it for way less than what the inspection place was going to charge you.

Too late for me on your 1st sentence... Inspection was expired on May 31... So now the car has no inspection sticker... I'm a dumb ass...

Are these the correct control arm bushings from Autozone?

Unless you have a press, you aren't going to be replacing the bushings on your own. Your best bet is buying loaded control arms and installing those on your own.

What???
We don't have to do safety inspection unless it's being sold. Emissions - every 2 years.

NYS is safety and emissions yearly.

Dorman control arms are somewhere around $45 each on rockauto, and come with new bushings and ball joints.

OK on the control arms... Thanks...

Now a question on the rack&pinion assembly... I see two options for this listed on the AutoZone and RockAuto sites... The option is with or without the ride&handling suspension (with or without FE2 option code)... I have no idea what this is or which I have... How can I determine what I have with regards to this?

Your SPO label (found on the door or trunk lid) will have a list of codes on it. You should see FE2, FE3 or FE4. That'll point you in the right direction.

I was able to hook up with a buddy of my stepson who works at a local shop... He re-did the inspection for me and "passed" the car... So I am good with a current NYS inspection now and the $1300 pressure is off me... But I would still like to at least replace the lower control arms at my leisure... Is that a "bolt off - bolt on" job? Is an alignment needed after the new control arms are installed?

Yes and yes.

Sometimes its tough to break the ball joint free from the knuckle, so you may need to rent a pickle fork from autozone/advance.
