2003 Chevrolet Impala

PostPosted: Mon May 14, 2012 3:58 pm    Post subject:  Transmission shifting hard Reply with quote

Hey guys

The last few weeks the tranny in my 2003 Impala LS with 280,000KM has been occasionally shifting hard until the car has been driven for about ten minutes.

The fluid looks as though it needs to be changed, I've owned the car for almost 2 years and haven't changed it yet.

Fluid looks pink/brown doesn't smell burnt. I've done lots of reading on just dropping the pan and changing the filter but that only gets about half the fluid out as the remainder is in the torque converter.

Has anyone removed the oil cooler line and started the engine pushing the fluid out of the torque converter?

*I'm not even sure where the oil cooler return line is.

Is this recommended?

Thanks

my tranny did the same thing.
I did a tranny fluid and filter change, no difference
ended replaced my tranny,it never blew up though....
havent had the issue since. what happens is pcs solenoid gets stuck then pcm say max out line pressure so it will get unstuck...pretty much sums it up...
someone here will be able to tell you more details then i can, i said screw this and got another tranny lol
goodluck.

I wonder if it is a difficult job to change out the PCS yourself, without a hoist etc

Its not too bad to do. You will need an transverse engine brace. It should take 6 hours to do if you take your time. There is a good step by step on the gran prix forums (I think) with pictures included. I had the hardest time with how much to tilt the engine.

Seems to be a lot of posts about this...I had transmission issues a few months back and got the solenoids replaced. It has ran great ever since. Here is a good DIY

I had hard up shifts from 1 to 2, and 2 to 3 gears. I ordered the TransGo shift kit from David at Triple Edge Performance in Fort Wayne Indiana. The kit cost about $80, plus a filter. It took me less than two hours. and less than $150 in parts. After the repair, my car has been shifting great.

The http://tripleedgeperformance.com/ has a lot of technical information to help you diagnose the problem, and David was very helpful.
