Someone help me choose!!!!!

Im tired of this Linksys WRT54G router dropping the connection (both wired and wireless) multiple times a day.

Everything I have is set up for 802.11g, will need to buy all new adapters to go N, but will do what I have to.

Linked to it at all times....

3 PCs (XP, XP, Vista)
2 Laptops (XP, 7)
3 Smartphones (Galaxy Nexus, Epic4G, Epic4G)

I have used nothing but Linksys routers (2 in 8+ years) without issue. Only switched to go Wireless N 2 years ago. Sounds like a bad unit. Try another one out.

N routers are supposed to be backward compatible so your G network devices should still work with whatever device you decide on.

i bought a linksys E3200 about a month ago to make my whole house wireless. Two computers and three blu rays run off of it. Not a single problem yet. And like you I have not been fond of linksys in the past but maybe they figured out the problem.

would recommend wireless N if you are going to be purchasing a new router anyway. The N standard is backwards compatible with G so all your devices will run. The issue is that when a G device is connected the whole network is limited to that speed. now thats not really an issue for internet because G is sufficient.

What that does effect thought is the data being sent intranetwork as the speeds of G and N are seriously noticed. My solution would be to hard wire any devices that run G that you cant or are dont want to upgrade to N.

You will definitely want a gigabit switch in the router as it will be much better for the hardwired intranetworking. All your Operating systems will run no problem.

Your Nexus, and 2 Epics can run fine on Wireless N
depending on how old your laptops are they should have Wireless N cards as well (the older the more likely they have the 2.4 only and will not operate on the 5Ghz band. all routers that have the 5 will have a 2.4 so no worries.)

your desktops should be hardwired (just my firm belief lol) however Wireless N pcie cards can be had pretty easily. so all in all you are probably looking at buying a router and maybe 2 wireless cards.

I really hope this is clear as I have a tendency to ramble when it comes to computers. if I didnt answer your question or if there are others do tell.

PS if you are going to hardwire and need cat6...monoprice.com is usually a good place to look as far as prices and they are reliable.

poke around and find a deal on a router...itll be the most random place that youll see the best deal.

the D-link 655 looks to be a good way to go if you are against linksys..

average price i've been able to find is about $80

I am running a linksys e3000 now.

I had the same dropping issue with my old 54g but it was quite old and electronics fail after awhile such is life.

Belkin routers are junk. That's all I know about routers. Good luck.

I have the same Linksys one and have had no issues with it and i've had it for several years. Running a wired desktop to it then laptop, PS3, Tivo, phone, and Kindle Fire on wireless. Perhaps a bad unit? Don't know what else to recommend a neighbor of mine had me set up a Netgear one for them a couple years ago and it was a giant PITA.

Before you throw the router out and replace it, have you tried flashing DD-WRT firmware to it?

This.

Try Tomato or DD-WRT

It's free and certainly worth a shot before spending any amount of cash on new hardware.
