I recently picked up an unmarked 2001 9C1 for my daughter. It has 100k + miles on it but is in seemingly great shape (although I replaced the LIM and UIM gaskets). It seems to ride very harsh, bumps are almost painfully harsh.
Our department never used Impalas, so I don't know how harsh the ride is supposed to be. We used Ford Interceptors, even police Taurus sedans in recent years but even those two rode softer than this. So, should I be looking at replacing shocks (struts) to soften the ride? Rebound is not horrible so I'm not sure if it is a shock issue or just the way a 9C1 rides without radio gear and other cop stuff weighing it down.
Thinking about going to Sears when they have one of those Monroe sales if it is a shock issue.
The ride in mine was a little harsh until I replaced the struts and mounts about a year after I bought it...by that time the car had about 90K miles on the original struts.
The next time I changed the struts about 50K miles later, I also changed the springs since they were sagging a little bit too - my front splash guards were dragging on the occasional speed bump. I'm not sure if the sagging was due to wear and tear of the miles and hauling the occasional trailer or because I left the springs compressed for too long when I was changing the struts.
The ride is pretty good for a FWD car but not as cushy as a Crown Vic or a truck if that's what you are used to. I hate Sears and changing struts with the proper equipment and air tools isn't too painful. I think everyone here would recommend changing the mounts at the same time.
