I have a 2002 Impala 3.8 where the fuel gauge is reading wrong. If you fill it up, it is fine. It drops faster than it is supposed to while consuming fuel then starts to go back up. I assumed it was the fuel sensor and replaced that myself but it still behaves the same way. Is there anything else that would cause this?

Could be the stepper motor in your gauge cluster.. BBEngineer can fix that.

I believe its attached to the fuel pump canister. You can access it from underneath the rear seat.
