When replacing a transmission, with a used or re-manned unit, what happens if the gearing is not the same? Say the base model transmission with the 2.89? (I think) gears is swapped with the SS 3.05's (i think correct me if I am wrong thanks!) would it play nicely or is a tune needed? Because I am having trouble finding a replacement with the base model gearing. Any help appreciated. Thanks!!

yeah, you will need to change things in the pcm in order for the other trannys with different fdr's to work, plus you will also need the differential. i believe the 1997-2003 chevy venture used the same enginge/tranny as the impala also. i know the pontiac montana used the 3400 but i dont know what tranny it used.

the fdr on the 3400 impalas is 2.86.

I think the Montanas used a 3.29 FDR. Can't be sure on that one though.

I think there is more to it than that. I think they made some changes to the accumulator in varioue years for example. I would stick with the year that was for your trans or find a reliable supplier that can tell you what you can use or not use. Guessing may not yeild good results. I think the moderator (BB Engineering) answered this in another forum area, possibly anything goes or arounf that area.

Ugh, I remember the days where one would not dare to post a thread with such a title for the fear of a Wede, Helldo, Little Rock fiesta of comments

Would you suggest waiting for it to blow, or would you pull it out before? I have never had to deal with trannys before so I need to know the right way to handle it.

I'm waiting for mine to blow, (knock on wood) still drives pretty normal, with occasional long shifts, seems to be more so when It's cold out. but summers around the corner, I'll be done with school and hopefully land a good welding job, so my tranny can wait until I find a good one to replace it with. I guess it just depends how bad yours is. would suck to be stranded.. I have AAA so I'm not too worried.
