Something similar happened to me when I sold my 3000GT. I wish I had "now" pics but I never took any. I sold it in June 2011 and got to borrow it a few months back while my SS was in the shop getting the trans solenoids replaced. Lets just say the car was PRISTINE when I owned it... When I got to borrow it I noticed a huge dent on the passenger side rear quarter panel, dent in the front bumper, the glovebox handle was completely gone so it cant be opened now, interior was a mess in itself - seats torn, everything seemed to be covered in grime.
When I bought it the motor blew a month later (120k miles on it) so I had one imported from Japan with only 60k. The turbos were still good on the old motor even with the high mileage. The new owner has put 10k on the car and the front turbo is already blown, way too early for that to go so it has been getting beat on. Oh well though! Sorry to hear about the impala but it could be worse.
I guess I fall in the why does it matter club? Once you sell a vehicle, everything is out of your control. So what if someone neglects their car? I see plenty of cars that are cared for poorly, but as long as it doesn't happen when the car is in my possession, it doesn't bother me.
Protip: If you don't know what you're doing, don't do it.
