I had new tires put on my wife's 2002 Impala yesterday... Today she tells me the speed is indicating higher than she is actually going, like 35 mph when she is taking off from a stop. And in general indicating higher than it should.
I had new hubs/speed sensors replaced about 20k miles ago- had the whole traction control problem thing going on prior to that. This was resolved after replacing the hubs and harness. So I wouldn't think I have a speed sensor issue now.
Any ideas what the problem could be?
The only thing I noticed odd was the tire place put stick-on weights in the inside center of the rim, as opposed to the normal type that you hammer onto the rim lip, but I wouldn't think they would interfere with the sensor readings. The car has stock aluminum 16" 5 spoke rims.
I believe the speed sensor is in the transmission (if not then the engine)...the only part of the car that gets speed info from the ABS sensors is the EBCM which takes care of the ABS and traction control.
I'm going to say the stepper motor is your most likely culprit, but keep an eye on the gauges and see what they are doing.
