So i went to the junk yard the other day and lucky me found some taillight covers for my impala. They are not the same color so i'm going to need to get them painted to match ( I am going to do the sanding). Anyway I tried removing the center piece from center taillight itself with a screw driver and a heat gun only to miserably fail lol. How do i separate them, is like 3mm of adhesive bonding them. WTF!

PS Since now i have another pair of taillights(So i can mess up and learn from mistakes) i ma try to do the quad mod Very Happy

Heat gun and strong fishing line...with something to wrap it around other than your fingers. Smile

X2... sanding them prior will not take the paint price down... you may end up using too heavy of a grit and messing them up

The center piece taillight that I bought has a visible crack (not the cover). So i am going to take the cover off the center piece to put on my original taillight already mounted on my impala. The side taillights are ok so i dont need to take them apart, just sand and paint. As far as sanding, my dad worked in an autobody and he is going to help me out. And yes they reduce the price if you do the prep.

And frank can you explain more i not quite following you.

Warm up the cover with the heat gun to make the 3m tape soft. Then use the fishing line like you are flossing your teeth, between the cover and the taillight. It will cut the tape and the cover will come right off.
Wrap the line around a stick or something, otherwise it will cut into your hands.

I meant that if you start off with the wrong grit, they may still charge you to repair if needed

some shops wont even touch something that was prepped prior. I know the shop I use will not paint something if its already prepped by the customer. They only way they can guaranty their work is to do it from start to finish.
