With the heat wave we've been getting I tried to turn on the AC to no avail.

I've checked all fuses and will check the refrigerant level but I think it may be the compressor as when I press the AC button I can't hear anything.

Can someone confirm that you can indeed hear the compressor fire on when you press the AC button?

I should also mention that during the winter I had a new alternator and serpentine belt installed. Would any of these repairs have cause the AC to stop working?

Anything else I should check?

Yes you can hear the compressor clutch engage. Is your hvac blower turned on?

compressor won't engage if it is low on refrigerant.

HVAC blower is just the fan right? If so then yes, the heat works and I replaced the blower motor resistor so all speeds work.

Yes, if the fan is off the ac won't come on. So much for the easy fix. Try checking refrigerant as chibiblacksheep suggested.

Anyone know how many cans or refrigerant a 3.8L Impala needs?

Well. Unless the system is completely empty you have no way of telling. You shouldn't vent the system because of the EPA rules.

I have added like 3/4 of a big can in 10 years on my impala. I suspect the only reason i had to add coolant is I had a dirty dealer drain some of it during a repair trying to make me do yet another service with them.

The adapters should have a pressure gauge on it. Don't overfill it.

Now on my dodge dakota that did have a leak, the compressor would try to turn on, then shut off because there wasn't any pressure in the system. So I had to load it and shake it while it was running, and it would "suck" from the low end and bring it into the system. So for an empty system I think I added maybe 2 or 3 big cans.

Impala 00-03 36oz refrigerant 9oz oil. (the replacement cans normally have some oil in there already, i personally don't know how to change the oil directly)

Impala 04+ 37 oz refrigerant, 8oz oi

youtube is helpful for watching other people charge their cars. I bought a little separate gauge without a can so i could test it without popping open a can.

These are closed systems, if you have to ADD refrigerant, then you have a leak.

Get it properly checked out.

You are correct. It is a closed system. I am just saying that it is very coincidental that I take my car to a dealership for an insurance repair, they have it for 4 days, they completely ignore the check engine light and tell me everything is done. Then when i ask about the other stuff, they say it isn't related to the accident so they aren't going to fix it ABS/traction control/etc. ( i rear ended someone). When i ask them about the issue if I were to fix it out of pocket, they say it would cost $1k for a "kit" and there is no guarantee that it will fix it.

And on the way home it is suddenly is blowing hot air.

I also noticed they didn't replace any of the foam in my bumpers when they did the repair, so i have to call them and b*tch about that. Thanks for the reminder.

Worst freaking dealer ever. I would sooner set my car on fire than have the people in ocala florida work on my car again.

I agree. I just called to get a copy of my insurance paperwork, it will be tomorrow before they have the record. That is definitely on my list of things to do.

Keep in mind if you are reading here most people come here to get help so you will see a lot of problems. Despite having spent so much on my 2001 I have to say it has been a good car.

The foam in the bumpers is energy absorbtion foam. It helps out in an accident. You want that in there.
