Well this has been in my car for a really long time now but i decided to upload some pics and do a write up... so here goes

Yeah its a rats nest of wires, but in most positions anything above halfway up the speaker is not visible...
this is the best picture i have of the haggard old triangular black box that used to be there...

basically it was just 4 peices of mdf 2 triangular sides a top with a speaker hole and a back to hold it up on the middle hump... wrapped in black felt.
So heres how to make it pretty:

^belt sand the hell out of the bottom...
but now its too shallow for the (new) speaker...

have to add a ring to push out the speaker-

^tidied up the corners too
wrapped it with some ray vinyl, sprayed expanding foam into the crack, and filled the back of the speaker with poly fill

New speaker to replace the old infinity kappa coaxial is a component polk MM 6.5, but the polk tweeters didnt sound good i used a jl audio tweeter... the setup is hooked to a bridged small stereo amp in the trunk which is fed from the center channel of the kenwood excelon system...

im in the market for a center console and leather seats... but i hate to see this go.

I tried something like that once but it didn't work out. I think I might build something again and see if I can't get an 8'' or even a 10'' up there.

You in the market for leather seats and center console? I have a complete leather seating & console from my 2001 that's up for sale still.

You could use the same space for a small subwoofer.

Im sure you could easily hide the wires with zip ties or something like them. You could also make a false wall there to hie them or something.

Just to have a fuller sound around the car. Bring some of the thud sound up front. something else to experiment with.

If your system is correctly tuned you should easily be able to bring the thud sound to the front using speakers in the trunk. Does your head unit have time alignment? The center speaker is to create a sound stage effect in the front of the car... especially when you play dvds...

THIS. Put a 8 or even a 6 in there. I would rather have my sub there than in the trunk honestly and be able to enjoy the bass.

That's why you put the center channel there. I've seen several cars with subwoofers installed in the same spot to avoid eating into precious trunk space. Considering that area is generally used for a center console/floor shifter, it makes perfect sense to make a subwoofer box and put it there if you desire to do so.

I'm not looking for a center speaker to use as a 5.1 set-up. And yeah, my speakers are all set to the right size and distance through the head unit. I do need to tune and play around with the settings on the amps a little more though. Like I said, just a little project to do just to see what it'll sound like. Just because I can.
