Barring all the loose nut behind the wheel comments Smile My steering wheel has become a little loose just recently. I'm an amateur mechanic and its nothing to do with the steering itself like the rack or tie rods I'm sure of that. But the wheel itself can be wiggled a bit in any direction about 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch. As you can imagine its very concerning. Is this a common issue, or more importantly an easy fix? I'm planning on popping the cover off and taking a look but if its a steering column issue I might just have to get rid of it.

Search on here for intermediate steering shaft issues, that may be your problem.

If you do go poking around with the steering wheel, disable the airbag first. Cool

I'll give it a look but it feels like... well you have to pardon me here if the impala has a different setup. But it feels like the nut holding the wheel on is loose.

I don't think it's ISS. Feel free to throw some white lithium grease on per the ISS writeup, since it's cheap and it's a common problem anyway.

Never heard of a steering wheel loose in all directions, I would think that's a potentially serious issue that means taking the wheel off to investigate.

That's what I was afraid of, I'll need to look at it and make the call if its worth fixing or if i should trade it off and let it be someone else's problem. I've been looking around on here for a write up on how to remove the wheel but I haven't found it yet.

Do you own a Haynes manual? I figure it would be in there. I know people around here use them: There's a better version of them, but I don't know what the name is - it's a different brand of book though.

Chilton, and I would own one if they made one for the impala. I know the mechanical systems are all the same as like a Grand Prix or Buick anything lol but I don't need a manual for any of that stuff.

I'd at least look into what the problem is. If it is a major mechanical issue the car isn't going to be worth anything...

Well, worst case scenario I have to put a steering column in it so it wouldn't remove too much value. The thing is still worth around 6 grand.

Remove #1 and #2... visually check # 25, there are 2 of them. Tighten if loose.#11 may also be loose or the bushing #12 is worn... not as likely as #25 though.
